You don’t want to be one of the 37 million persons in the US that have chronic sinusitis. More is spent on sinus disease medications than on asthma medications. About 400,000 sinus surgeries are done/ year. Many of these are repeat surgeries. Yet preventing and curing sinus disease is often highly effective if you know what works. Since I have written two books on sinus prevention and treatment- the latest is Free Yourself from Sinus and Allergy Problems-Permanently- and have published over 30 medical journal articles on this subject, I believe I can help you.
Many of my patients are scuba divers and pilots. They can’t take most sinus drugs. So, I treat in a drug free manner when I can.
In your nose and pulmonary system are millions of microscopic “hairs” called cilia. These beat at a rate of 14 pulses per second in order to move out bacteria and viruses. When they slow down bacteria can multiply. Postnasal drip is caused when cilia slow down and allow the mucus blanket to move too slowly. Note: in Acute Allergy the cilia speed up – your nose runs. But in the late stage of allergy, when the cilia are exhausted, then the cilia slow down and a sinus infection can result. This is why it is so important to keep good cilia movement.
Step One; Prevention. Don’t blow your nose hard. Hard nose blowing can move infected material into uninfected sinuses or into the ear. Take care of a common cold- bed rest and huge amounts of tea, lemon and honey. These help restore the nasal cilia which moves bacteria out of the nose.
Step Two; Don’t overdose with medication. At the sign of a cold, don’t rush to the pharmacy for cold pills, syrups, cough syrups. You best medicine is rest and tea, lemon and honey. Tea should be green or black, with or without caffeine. Get rest and good sleep.
Just as important, be sure to complete the prescription your doctor gives you. The worst thing a patient does is stops the antibiotic when she feels better. This allows the bacteria to develop resistance to antibiotics.
Step Three; Improve your immune factors. Don’t get chilled. Don’t let anxiety and worry lower your immunity. Try to relax and smile. Instead of worrying about being sick – the more you worry, the sicker you get- listen to cheerful music and Broadway Musicals. Watch comedies that make you laugh. Good sleep is vital. Yogurt and probiotic help your immune system.
Step Four; If you do get Chronic Sinusisits, ask your doctor about using pulsatile irrigation.
This is saline irrigation that pulses at a rate that simulates you nasal cilia to move at a normal rate. When the cilia move properly, they move bacteria out of the nose. Pulsatile irrigation is especially helpful in removing bacteria and biofilm, and doesn’t have a backflow problem. The fewer bacteria in your sinuses, the more chance you have for natural healing to clear the sinus problem Other means of stimulating good cilia movement are singing “ooooommmmm’ in a low pitch. Jumping jacks and jump rope do this too.
Avoid pollen and dust. Dust proofing the bedroom helps. Keep the nose moist -pulsatile irrigation and nasal gels and moisture in the bedroom.
Avoid squeeze bottles and pots that have backflow. Patients with chronic sinus disease have been found to be using bottles that are contaminated due to the backflow problem.
Step Five; Other aids: Plants pollinate at 5 A.M. and 5 P.M. so keep the bedroom windows closed then. If you suspect that pollen is a factor, use the Pollen Calender at http://www.pollen.com to help you diagnose what pollen is bothering you. Once you know which it is, you can use OTC NasoCrom for prevention. If you are stuck behind a diesel bus, that will slow your nasal cilia so be sure to rinse this away when you get home. Same for industrial toxins such as formaldehyde, copper dust and others.
Avoid diesel bus fumes. These can really knock out your defense system. If you are cleaning Grandma’s old dusty garage, wear a mask to filter the dust. If you are painting or spraying, make sure the room is well ventilated or better yet, do this outdoors. This is because an overwhelming exposure to chemicals can trigger your system to become hypersensitive.
Avoid heating in a new trailer. In a new trailer, heat will produce a large release of formaldehyde. If the unit is enclosed, you can get poisoned by this. This happened to the Katrina refugees that were housed in brand new trailers in the winter. Good ventilation is always important.
